Match Day

If you aren't a Mormon, you'll think that finding out where you matched for residency is the oddest ordeal ever.

They gather all the 4th year medical students into a big room (with lots of beats like Black Eyed Peas playing in the background). There are a few speakers that congratulate the students and then big white envelopes are passed out. At noon a loud horn goes off (sort of feels like the New Year's ball is dropping) and all the students rip open their letters at the same time to reveal where they matched for residency. This isn't just happening at Ohio State...it is going on at every medical school campus across the country at exactly 12:00. There is a lot of excitement, disbelief, and even a few tears as people find out where they will be spending the next 3-4 years and congratulate their fellow classmates.

Does this sound familiar to you? If you've ever served an LDS mission it's totally like opening a mission call, right?! It is a little different because you don't get to turn in a ranked list when you send in your mission papers...and the residency programs don't tell you that you're going to have to perform your work in a foreign language, etc. But it still brought back memories.

Ophthalmology is actually an early match so we have known since January where we are going. In case you missed the memo:

Our news was delivered in a much less-dramatic way. One of the OSU deans called Andrew in the morning and he came downstairs (with a HUGE grin on his face) and told me we matched at Michigan. We were still in our pajamas.

Still, we went to match day today to find out where we are going for transitional year ( aka his 1st year of residency; we don't start at Michigan until his 2nd year of residency). We kind of already knew that we would be staying in Columbus and are very happy with the results. Even though we didn't have the same feeling of suspense that everyone else was experiencing, it was so fun to watch our friends open their letters and see where they will be off to next.

And then I might of began to realize that we are all leaving and going in different directions and felt a slight tinge of sadness. Maybe.

I'm definitely going to be sad saying goodbye! Can I help you paint your walls?! :)

We're glad you guys will be here with us for our last year. It will make it a lil less sad to have a close friend who stays!

Wow, I didn't know anything about that whole tradition. Kind of fun! And it totally reminded me of when people are called on missions. That must have been why they came up with that...because they know it's so exciting :0). Congratulations! That's so exciting that you don't have to wonder anymore where you'll be for the next few years!

If he goes into pediatric ophthalmology there will be lots of jobs available. Kevin's doctor said they've been looking to fill a position here in UT for years

Ok, that was kinda interesting. I thought, well, I'm a Mormon and I don't see why I would have a diff. perspective on the rotation announcements. However, yes, that DOES sound like what I've heard from missionaries. Well, good luck to you all. Thanks for the cameron postcard. He has such the "newborn" look in it. what a sweetie!
