Life's Regrets

[Andrew]

In the wake of what I consider the best television ever, and after 3 days to properly soak in all the intricate plots, subplots, details, underpinnings, and morals of LOST and its fabulous finale, one emotion continues to scourge my psyche: regret.

In my life I can only think of three things that I regret...three. I am not saying I have only done three regretful things, only that these three are the things that I cannot forget.

1- Winning fewer ribbons than Phil T. in the Westwood elementary 5th grade field day in 1993.
2- Not starting a fight and getting thrown out of the BYU vs. Arizona game in 2006 after my punt returner, and good friend, was intentionally speared before the ball touched his hands.
3- Not convincing more of my family and friends to watch LOST so they could have experienced the unforgettable ride in real time.

To those who did not see or did not appreciate this final season, forgive me!

best. show. ever.

Just to follow up, the series finale did not disappoint. We loved it. I'm still trying to process everything since much was left to personal interpretation (Lost is good at that). However, I love that it is two days later, and I still can't stop thinking about it.

I don't want to spoil anything for people who still want to watch the series, so I really should play it down a little. To warn you, there are a lot of mysteries presented and not all of them are answered. And many of the answers only lead to more questions. If you are a Type A, analytical sort, you will love the mysteries and all the clues to consider, but you will be frustrated when many answers seem cryptic and open to interpretation. You need your right brain to be creative and come up with your own meanings.

I was always way more intrigued with the complex characters and their individual redemption projects, so for me, the finale was extremely satisfying and provided all the resolution that I needed.

For those with some time to kill, I really think its worth it. You can view all episodes online here

p.s. if you're looking to satisfy your geeky side, I really enjoyed this little talk by JJ Abrams (he created Lost and a bunch of other shows/movies).

My Lost Prediction

I know that no one really cares about this (I can always count on Mom and Dad to read), but I think Andrew has been anxious to see his mullet picture disappear from front and center, and this is the biggest thing going on this weekend.

I can't believe Lost going to be over. Imagine reading a book for 6 years and finally getting a few pages from the ending (and still having no clue how it will end). I'm pretty pumped to say the least. So here are the top 5 things I love about Lost and my prediction for the ending.

5 - It is a great geek outlet. Seriously, if there is a geek somewhere hiding within you...Lost will satisfy your geekiness in a semi-socially-acceptable way.

4- It takes effort to be a fan of Lost. You cannot miss a single episode (although they are all conveniently located online to watch whenever). And if you don't think about things deeply, you will have no clue what is going on. I appreciate a show that doesn't insult my intelligence.

3- My brother-in-laws think I am sooooo cool for watching Lost.

2- There is some wicked good acting going on here. You just won't find more meaty characters than John Locke, Ben, Jack, etc...I'll even throw Hurley in there.

1- I love the themes addressed in Lost. I'm personally not quite so interested in Island mythology or the science of time-travel and electromagnetism. I am much more interested in the themes of redemption, free-will v. determinism, faith v. science, the power of community, etc. Throw in a few cool spiritual allegories and metaphors and you have the recipe for a though-provoking masterpiece. I wish they made more shows like this.

I think we might as well just throw our TV away after tomorrow.

My finale prediction: I think that everyone on the Island will die except for Jack who will remain to protect it. Or maybe Ben will be the one to remain. In any case, none of them are going home. In the Sideways world, all the castaways will obtain what they wanted most in the Island world via Desmond. Jack will have Kate. Sawyer will have Juliet. Jin and Sun will have their baby. John will walk and be married to his fiance. Hurley already has Libby. Claire will have Aaron. Sayid will have Nadia. Its all about the love people.

Maybe if Andrew had been born in Laramie, WY...

and maybe if I liked to hang out at Monster Truck rallies a little more...

...this could have been our future.

In reality it was just my sister having fun with her hair extensions (she tried them on me too and they also had a mullet affect for some reason. Guess I need longer hair).

By the way, no offense to Laramites out there. Although I have yet to meet anyone from Wyoming who would disagree with me.

To all the Moms without kids...

First of all, of course, Happy Mother's Day to my angelic Mother and wonderful Mother-in-law! I love them so much and look to them often for help and advice...more than they realize.

All day, I couldn't help but think of all the women I've been influenced by who aren't technically moms. Do they realize how incredible they are and that they fit the "mother" criteria, in most ways, better than I do? I'll tell you about a few of them but I will use their initials so I don't cause any unwanted attention.

First of all, E.M. is the most amazing sister around (oops, I let that one out of the bag). I wish I could tell you stories about how she mothered me as I was growing up, but they are all waaay to embarrassing for me to share. I can tell you that she is the master of femininity. When I hear daughters speak of how their mothers taught them how to do their hair, what matches and what doesn't match, and how to flirt with boys, etc., I have to attribute all those lessons to E.M (although I never really became a very good flirt and she may fear that her fashion lessons went to waste). She continues to mother her nieces and nephews and you will never meet a more adored Aunt.

Next is S.G. who I taught with at the MTC. This woman could bring the spirit into a room like that *snap please*. She taught with such confidence and power that I often wanted her to come into my classroom and work her magic on my missionaries. She knew how to command an audience and get people's attention (and made it look effortless). I sometimes wonder if I could rent her out to teach the gospel to Luke. He would be so lucky!

R.G. (doesn't read my blog) but she helps me out with Activity Days at church. I look to her for efficiency. I come to her with a gazilion activity ideas to do with the girls in the course of an hour and she, very kindly, gets realistic with me and formulates a plan that will actually work. She never tells me (out loud) that I am crazy for thinking that I can fit so much into an hour or that I should have thought of the specifics before jumping into such a big project. She is perfectly patient and incredibly talented at being the rationale mind. She is confident in who she is, always accepts compliments, and has an uncanny ability to get perfect strangers to open up to her (really, one time we were having lunch at a restaurant and the waitress just started talking to her about all this drama...I thought they knew each other). Trust me, I learn a lot about mothering from this woman.

And the last one I'll share tonight is J.G. I have to keep this one short so I don' t tear up. I'll send Luke to J.G. one day for lessons on faith. I don't know anyone with greater faith than this woman. I don't know anyone with more humility than this woman. Sometimes I feel like I babble on and on without really saying anything (I'm not being hard on myself, it just happens sometimes). But everything that J.G. says is thoughtful, kind, and true. She is one of those Mom's who would not say anything until she totally understood a situation and could say the absolute perfect thing. One of those Mom's who is quoted in Sacrament Meeting talks.

(p.s. she could also teach them how to make ANYTHING in the world, because this woman truly can make ANYTHING with her own two hands).

So thanks to all the women out there who technically aren't Moms but TRULY ARE MOTHERS. I need you in my life!

My New Life

This video clip is really good. I remember seeing this woman on Oprah a while back (yes, occasionally -maybe once or twice a month- after a long day, I do watch Oprah...but I'm not a huge Oprah fan. And it always happens on the rare day that Andrew comes home early from work and sees my eyes glazed over in front of the TV. What luck! I might as well get out a big gallon of ice cream and put on my pajamas too)

This woman's story is amazing and I aspire to have her attitude and humility.

Happy Anniversary Week

We extended our wedding anniversary celebration into a week this year (actual date: April 25th). My family in Utah watched Luke so that Andrew and I could escape for a few days down south. This was actually my request because I was slightly green with envy after seeing the pictures from this little man escapade last year.

Goblin Valley

Our impression of a goblin.

Andrew thought this one made a pretty cool throne

Little Wild Horse Canyon

We camped just outside Little Wild Horse Canyon (part of the San Rafael Swell). It was VERY windy so our camping spot was perfect to keep out the wind.

Okay, I've been known to make really lame "tough" faces in the past, but this one isn't half bad! Although, I think Andrew failed with the puffy lower lip. More sad than intimidating.

The hike itself which we started around 6am the next morning...

This is starting to become a necessary tradition, the token kissing picture... (although to be perfectly honest, we were cutting it pretty close with the timer and Andrew running back and forth, so the best we could do was to have our faces touching).

Canyonlands

After this, we became crazy parents that missed Luke too much and went back home (in our defense, there was a snow storm coming). In any case, having some one-on-one time with Andrew was WONDERFUL. Happy 3rd miele.

(this video is specifically for Andrew's brothers who spend most of their camping outings pushing rocks off cliffs. i thought I could demolish this one with a kick, but I guess I need some practice)
