I just read an entire parenting book (but would also be great for teachers or anyone who is concerned or interested in the development of boys). I read it cover to cover which is a rarity for me. I usually get bored, or just skip to the good stuff and ignore the rest. But this book was fabulous. You MUST read it if you have boys. Especially if they are getting ready to start school. I don't usually put myself behind books and recommend them so strongly but this one was very eye-opening for me and covered so many different aspects and causes for why so many boys these days are growing up to be slackers.
Have you noticed that? I am lucky that most of the men I know personally do not fall into this category. However, there is a good chance that you have known or see boys who don't seem motivated or interested in much of anything that has real value in life. As men they are just sort of floating along without any real desire to serve others, work toward meaningful goals, or take on responsibility.
This book is based in research without being dry and boring. Even if you feel like some of the topics discussed don't really apply to your son, I promise there will be something of interest to you.
From the book:
"...a culture is defined in part by how it answers the question 'What defines a real man?' Every culture must make choices and value judgments. Indeed, one can almost define a culture by the choices its people make. We must choose, individually and collectively, how we are going to define masculinity. If we abstain from this choice, that failure to make a choice is itself a choice..."

Did you listen to that Priesthood session talk from this past conference? I can't even remember who it was (Christensen, or someone like that), but it spoke to the very same topic. It was really good! Thanks for the great book recommendation. I have a few years, but I've already read siblings without rivalry, so clearly I don't think it's too early to get a good start! xoxo
So, I'm commenting on this post, but only b/c you turned off comments on the Steve Young post. The funny thing is that when I saw the title of your post on my blog, I thought "I wonder if she met Steve Young or something." I must be like a psychic or something. In other news, did you ever talk to him or make Donut talk to him, or did you just stare? Just curious ;)
I will plan on reading it! And since you turned off comments on the last post, I'll have to post it here. Wish I knew you guys were there at the game - we were too!! Would have been awesome to see you. We sat in the end zone so we could see touchdown Jesus. The game was awesome huh?
Love any recommendation for a book like this! Thanks! And yes, you are incredibly nerdy for the last post, and that is EXACTLY why you're a perfect friend for me. :) Glad you get to check that off your bucket list!
Such a good book. I read it a while back and I'm still quoting it to people.
