Feeding the Pain

Today I took Luke to get some blood drawn for a routine blood test. It was one of the most excruciating things I've ever had to witness. When they put the rubber band around his arm and I had to hold him tight to keep him from moving, he gave me a look that said, "Et tu, brute?". I felt like I had betrayed him to the phlebotomy gods.

Of course, it all ended well after lots of hugs and cheerios. Still, I felt so bad as I drove home that I stopped by McDonald's to buy him a "vanilla ice cream peace offering". I knew deep down that it didn't matter to him one bit, but it made me feel so much better. Then I wondered if maybe I was starting a bad a habit by feeding his pain with junk food. I hope, in the future, he doesn't crave McDonald's soft serve every time he gives blood.

It look him a while to realize that he could actually pick it up, but I think he got the hang of it.

Lauren, have you seen the massive snack attack they have for people who give blood at the donor places? Apparently even us adults seem to require some kind of sweet reward, so I say let the kid have ice cream! XOXO

By any chance, was that lead testing he was in for? I remember the first time they put one of our kids through that; Dad got to take the next kid in who needed it done.

haha! I thought that was so funny I had to tell my hubby, Devan. You really painted the picture with the "E tu brute" comment.
